Help & advice
There are many things that can crop up in the world of heating & plumbing. Some can be easily fixed, but alas many others take more effort to resolve, or get to the bottom of. Products don't last forever and sadly it can often be easier to replace products rather than attempt to patch up or prolong things that have served their time
We have put together a range of quick fixes and other things to think about to help you manage your home
No.1 - Boiler pressure issues
All combi boiler systems are known as 'pressurised systems' as opposed to the more traditional style of tanks in the loft or 'gravity systems'. Therefore if the system pressure falls below around 0.5bar, in many cases the boiler will not fire up and the system pressure needs to be topped up.
There are different methods for different boilers but essentially you need to open up the filling loop, or valve for a short time to let more cold water in the heating circuit. We recommend topping boiler pressure up to between 1.0-1.5 bar.
If your boiler needs to be topped up quite frequently, this may indicate you have a leak on the system, possibly from a radiator valve, and this will need looking at.
Our good friends at Practical Women have put together a detailed page on topping up different boilers types along with some useful help videos you can check out here.
Worcester Bosch Greenstar - boilers there is generally one of two systems - older boilers have a key system and white square plastic knob underneath the boiler that needs to be turned whereas newer systems have a simple 'pull down' valve on the right hand side.
Vaillant Ecotec boilers - there are generally two grey/silver handles underneath the boiler. As you look at these they read 'closed' - turn first the cold water valve on the right 1/4 turn and then the same for the other valve on the left. You should hear water entering the system. Make sure both valves are closed again when topped up.
